This course covers the fundamental concepts of database systems. One major objective is to acquaint the students with the use of current relational database systems, which is closely related to usage of the query language called SQL. Topics also include principles and methodologies of database design, and techniques for database application development.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have gained knowledge of database system concepts and the ability to:
• understand the basics of digital data recording
• understand the basics of logical operation
• understand the basic structures of existing databases
• effectively search existing databases using SQL
• understand new user requirements/views

This is a normal 2-credit course, which basically means that in addition to the scheduled meeting times, students are expected to do at least 3 hours of course-related work outside of class each week during the session. This includes work done completing assigned readings, preparing written/programming assignments, studying for tests and examinations, and other course-related tasks.
