This course provides a broad overview of sociological theories until Parsons' theory. It aims at giving students sociological ideas which will help to grasp various social phenomena in clearer or deeper level.

After completing this course, you will be able to: 1). Understand basic ideas or concepts of sociology and to realize the problems sociological theories until Parsons attemped to solve. 2). Take a critical attitude to various phenomena which will occur in contemporary society.

This course follows the policy of the Faculty of Social and Information Studies in aiming to cultivate those students: 1). who possess the comprehensive, interdisciplinary knowledge necessary for understanding in broad perspective and some field of specialized knowledge through which they seek deeper knowledge of society and humanity. 2). who can identify the issues of society relating to production, distribution, processing, accumulation, and utilization of information, and can scientifically analyze and investigate them.

Major perspectives and concepts are presented, including the birth of sociology, modernization, community and society (Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft), Protestant ethics, Marxism and social classes, and sociological functionalism.

Though students are not required to read some books in advance, related literatures are shown in every class for further study.

|
Attendance of more than two-thirds of the classes is required. At the end of the course, each student is assigned a final grade as follows: Grade S (100-90%); A (89-80%); B (79-70%); C (69-60%); D (59- %). In the examination, each students can take in handouts from the lecturer, and the notebook of his/her own.
