This course provides an opportunity of advanced learning of decision supporting for students in the faculty of social and information studies. Students are also expected to learn how to conduct a research in this field. Beginning with vague ideas and intuitions they gradually concretize their object of research and gather the necessary data.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1) Utilize various sources to gather data for an academic document; 2) Organize ideas, write annotated bibliographies, and thesis statements; 3) Understand how to develop outlines for academic documents.

Paper reading and group discussions are the main content of this course. In one year, every student is expected to make several presentations. Many topics related to social decision-making are to be learned through discussions.

This is a lecture style class with demonstrations and opportunities to ask questions. You are welcome to bring your laptop to follow along.
|

The course outline is as follows:
[1] a) Owning your research, b) Reading your sources, c) Exploring and sharpening your tonic, d) Writing a research proposal,
[2] a) Gathering information, b) Taking notes and keeping records, c) Citing your sources and avoiding plagiarism, d) Writing and annotated bibliography,
[3] a)Developing new information, b)Writing and refining your thesis, c) Organizing your project, d) Drafting your project.
During the term, each student is to make small presentation three or four times. Each presentation will be followed by a group discussion.

Students are encouraged to read related books and reference materials before attending classes. It is also advisable to spend much time to prepare for oral discussions.
